Robert Clive, better known as Clive of India was an employee of the East India Company, the British owned and government backed trading company in India that was, at the time, the largest company in the world.
Clive came to the forefront on the military side of the company and was largely responsible for establishing the company’s (and hence Britain’s) military superiority on the sub-continent resulting in, not only France losing all influence there, but also the subjugation of Indian princes to British control and authority.
In due course the British Raj in India would be created from the East India Company.
