John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough was the foremost European General of the early 18th Century and is remembered as a superb battlefield commander.
His victories over the French in a series of battles marked Britain’s emergence as a great power. These victories include the battles of Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenaarde and Malplaquet.
Besides his tactical flare, he was one of the first Generals to pay great attention to logistics and to the welfare of his soldiers who referred to him as, “Corporal John”. He is still today consistently ranked as one the greatest Generals of the modern era and, arguably, as England’s greatest General.
